Joel Shpigel, R.Ph.
Co-founder and Partner
With more than 40 years of experience as a pharmacist, manager, pharmacy owner, business executive, and clinician, Joel brings experience and knowledge to the leadership position at Focus Medical Supply Pharmacy.
Starting in 1973, as a pharmacy intern for a chain of retail pharmacies, Joel worked his way up to a store manager, general manager, and vice-president. Getting the entrepreneurial urge, he opened his own retail pharmacy in 1990 and, soon after, partnered with a friend to create a national mail-order pharmacy specializing in diabetes.
Along the way, Joel learned the value and importance of providing personalized attention to his customers. He ensures that his staff treats every customer as a friend, just like your pharmacist did at the neighborhood corner pharmacy years ago.
Combining that personalized attention with more than 25 years of specialized diabetes supply and pharmacy ownership, you can understand why customers love the service, convenience, and warmth of their everyday dealings with Focus Medical Supply Pharmacy.
Joel is a 1973 Temple University graduate with a B.A. in Psychology. He graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy with a B.S. in 1976. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society, Adelphi Lodge of B’nai B’rith, and Old York Road Temple-Beth Am. Married for 41 years, Joel and his wife Toby have two married sons and two grandchildren.
Joel and Toby established the Shpigel Family Scholarship Fund in 2011 to provide scholarships to students of Temple University School of Pharmacy who are pursuing a career in independent pharmacy practice and have financial need.
In early 2012, Joel spearheaded the formation and funding of the Fred B. Gable ’51 Endowed Cultural Fund to honor the former Assistant Dean of Admissions and “Champion of the Arts.”
